Working with a team is a tricky business. It is more daunting when you are managing a social media team which exclusively works online. It’s a balancing act keeping up with a team which members work in different times with diverse tasks, establishing their careers at home and making sure that the team is hitting its targets. Here’s a short guide on how to handle social media teams.

Knowing the Team Members

This should be your first concern at the moment the team is created. Knowing the strengths, weaknesses, skills, and work process of each team member will provide you with an overview of how future projects will be done. Imagine playing a really complicated chess game or leading a team of superheroes. You have to know the capability of each piece to create your plans and strategies.

With this information at your disposal, you can now then delegate tasks that play with your members characteristics.

Communicating Online and Offline

As much as you want to safeguard your office and check with your team members, it isn’t always the case especially when you’re handling a social media team.  Though the advantage, power of social media will allow you to reach your team at any time of the day. You have to establish a consistent method of communicating with your team. Will you be checking their daily progress? Will you be requiring weekly reports? Will you be holding meetings? Will there be meet ups and brainstorming sessions?

Also, your team should have access to documents and information needed for their tasks. Online documents, whiteboards, and FAQs should be at their disposal to react to crisis quickly. Since you are working at different times, you may not be available when they need to decide on something. Written goals, guidelines, and action plans should be provided to keep track of productivity.

Project Management

Project management encompasses all that has been said above, both the good news and the bad news in project management. Aside from brainstorming at the start of the project, be open to suggestions from your team while executing tasks. Your action plans should be flexible to optimize and maximize results. After all, they are the ones who know the ups and downs of their tasks. Unlike a typical office team where you have to wait for the daily report to pitch your ideas, in a social media team, you can be as open and as accommodating as you want. This is valuable as information in social media is time sensitive. Work with your team and make sure that you integrate their ideas with your own.
